In Montana's remote Centennial Valley, the University of Utah's Taft-Nicholson Center is proving that intellectual community thrives in the wild.

Eric Herschthal, associate professor of history at the University of Utah, and co-author John Brooke of The Ohio State University have been awarded the Forest History Society’s 2025 Theordore C. Blegen Award for “The Plantation Carbon Complex: Slavery and the Origins of Climate Change in the Early Modern British Atlantic.”

W. Paul Reeve, professor of History and Simmons Chair of Mormon Studies, and co-authors Christopher Rich and LaJean Purcell Carruth, were recently awarded the Utah Historical Society’s Best Book in Utah History for "This Abominable Slavery: Race, Religion, and the Battle over Human Bondage in Antebellum Utah."
